Choosing solo

When is solo the right choice?

When the room is a room rather than a hall: a ceremony, a dinner, a drinks reception, a private celebration. One voice carries intimacy that a band cannot, and a band carries a dance floor that one voice cannot. The question is which of those the moment needs.

Is it voice on its own, or voice and piano?

Either. Voice with piano is the usual shape and the most flexible, because it can go from background to centrepiece without changing the setup. Voice with backing tracks is also possible where the arrangement calls for more than two hands.

Is sound equipment needed for a solo set?

For a small room, often not at all, which is part of why solo suits a ceremony. For anything larger or outdoors, yes, and it is agreed in advance rather than assumed on the day.

Can solo grow into a band for the same event?

Frequently, and it is one of the most common arrangements: solo for the ceremony, a larger lineup later in the evening. Ask for both in the same enquiry and the quote covers the whole day as one plan.
